Prologue[]

The snow was melting, turning into slush, then into water, which turned the frozen ground in WolfClan territory to mud. The sky was pitch black, the moon lost from sight, as striped bodies slipped through the shadows. The one in the lead growled in irritation as his huge paws slid in the muck.

"We picked the wrong night!" he muttered angrily.

"Calm yourself, Redstar, we had to do it soon," his deputy, Hawkheart, whispered beside him.

"I can't wait! It's feels good to be back at it again!" said another from behind, his pelt practically crackling with excitement. As they continued, Redstar replayed Goldenstar's words over and over.

"Give them a scare," he had said. "Show them how strong you are."

"But how can we, without a battle?" Redstar demanded.

Goldenstar leaned in closely, his eyes glinting mischievously.

"Think back to your glory days, Redstar. Think back to what made every warrior tremble in fear at the thought of TigerClan," he prompted.

"Our strength?" Redstar guessed.

"Kit raids."

It was true. Moons ago, TigerClan had been feared by all. They had been strong, with many well-trained warriors, a good leader, and, late at night, they would sneak into other camps and steal kits. Redstar had been deputy at the last one, which had been right after Stormstar had left. And now, even today, every cat and wolf knew about the kit raids, and still shuddered at the mention of them. Elders told stories of them, queens warned their own kits of them, night patrols were wary of them.

So here they were. At it again.

"We're almost there," Redstar told Hawkheart, who passed the message on to the others. Timberclaw, one of the best warriors in the Clan, came up on Redstar's left.

"No sign of a patrol. They must be toward the LionClan border," he reported.

"Excellent," the leader purred. He was excited himself. It had been a while since his claws had torn WolfClan pelts.

The barrier came in sight. Redstar called for his warriors to halt. He turned and faced them, staring each one in the eye.

"You know what to do," he whispered. "Go in, take the kits, fend off any enemies who wake up. Don't kill them. We only want to scare and humiliate them." Every tiger nodded, their faces full of anticipation, excitement, nerves. This would be a night to remember.

Redstar flicked his tail.

"Let's go," he commanded, leading the way into the silent camp. Memories flashed in Redstar's head as he went toward the nursery. He thought of the battle that had driven out Stormstar. Even though he was gone, the wolf haunted his dreams. Just being back in this camp made Redstar shudder.

"Something wrong?" Hawkheart asked. Redstar shook his head and entered the nursery. Only one queen resided there, a jet black she-cat, fast asleep. Two kits slept soundly beside her, a tabby and an exact copy of her.

Redstar motioned for Timberclaw to take them. He was the most careful, and, being a father himself, knew how to handle kits. He gently grabbed their scruffs with his teeth, and carried them back to the others, eyes gleaming with triumph.

"Good," Redstar murmured, backing out of the nursery and starting for the barrier again. But just as he reached it, a huge dark shape flew in front of him.

"Where do you think you're going?"

Shadowsplash. Brother of Stormstar.

To be continued...

Chapter 1 ~ One Of Us[]

Snowfire woke long before dawn the next day, too nervous to sleep.

Today, he would fight Brindleclaw.

Today, he would be humiliated.

Beside him, Raingaze was sound asleep, her body completely relaxed. A warm, fuzzy feeling appeared inside Snowfire as he looked at her. She was very beautiful, and also very kind. He couldn't help but wonder if she loved anyone.... Snowfire shook his head, trying to clear it. He had to concentrate. He had to focus on the fight.

I need to at least try to win! he thought.

Realizing there was no point in just sitting in the den, Snowfire got up, carefully stepped over the warriors, and went out into the camp. The air was cold and crisp, though it felt good on his fur. The sky was dark, still faintly dotted with stars, the moon fading. The snow was melting, the wet ground now visible. At least the journey home, if there was one, would be easier.

Suddenly, through the trees, Snowfire spotted a huge, dark shape sitting alone. It had to be Stormstar.

Though he was reluctant, Snowfire quietly padded over to the wolf. He wasn't sure what his reaction would be, but he wanted to talk to him. There was no one else.

"What is it, Snowfire?" Stormstar asked quietly, just as Snowfire came up behind him. "Couldn't sleep anymore?" Stormstar had really good senses!

Snowfire sat down beside him, keeping his distance and nodding in reply.

"I didn't mean to disturb you," he said quickly.

"No, it's fine. Sleep has evaded me too, although for different reasons."

Snowfire looked over at him, wondering why he couldn't sleep. Did the memory of his Clan haunt him? Was he grieving?

"Why does Brindleclaw want to fight me?" he found himself suddenly asking.

"He says you need to prove yourself. I don't see why, really, seeing as you managed to complete this journey alone," Stormstar admitted.

"I had Sandstripe for most of it," Snowfire reminded him.

"Even still, you seem very strong to be able to survive that. In the middle of leafbare too, with or without...her," he finished uneasily. Why was Stormstar so reluctant to say Sandstripe's name?

"Why don't you call the fight off, if you disagree with him?" Snowfire questioned.

"Because, to be perfectly honest, I'm curious myself to see your skills."

"But I'm not even at half my strength! Why not wait and see them later, when I won't be defeated?"

Stormstar suddenly turned and faced him, his green eyes blazing, but not with anger. No, this emotion was unreadable.

"Snowfire, a fight tests two different parts of a warrior. One, his physical strength, his skills. The other tests his mental and emotional strength. The only way to pass these two tests is to put your heart into the battle, regardless of how skilled you are. You will always be victorious if you put your heart into it," he said wisely. Snowfire could see why he had been a leader. And yet, this wise side to him was strange. He seemed so quiet and cold, yet now he was opening up to him a bit.

"Oh..." he trailed off, unable to say anything. "Thank you."

"The only way to put your heart into it is to believe in your skills, and never, never be arrogant. No matter how strong your paws are, your mind is what really counts. I have seen very powerful warriors be defeated with one strike because their heart wasn't in the battle."

Snowfire listened intently, trying to remember everything he said.

He hoped it would help.

A while later, with the sun fully up, Snowfire changed into a wolf.

It was time. Across the camp from him was Brindleclaw, who was also a wolf. His eyes gleamed with anticipation. Brindleclaw obviously liked fighting. The rest of the warriors stood off to the side, Stormstar in front. Every pair of eyes was on Snowfire. He felt his pelt burn under their gaze.

Raingaze looked on with worry but with belief.

"You can do it, Snowfire. I know you can," she had whispered to him beforehand. Snowfire hoped she was right as Stormstar stepped forward and gave a nod. Brindleclaw returned the gesture, then faced Snowfire.

"Ready?" he asked.

Trying to call everything he had learned from Blizzardstar to his head, Snowfire dipped his head in reply.

The moment he did, Brindleclaw shot forward, aiming straight for his stomach. Snowfire remembered learning diversionary techniques, and sidestepped away, narrowly dodging. Brindleclaw hit the dirt, and he pounced, raking his claws down his sides. But his opponent was much larger and stronger, and easily threw him off. Snowfire landed hard on his paws, managing to stay standing up, as the wolf charged again. This time, Snowfire met him midway, crashing into his forepaws, unbalancing him. The two rolled on the ground, snapping and clawing at each other. Brindleclaw gave Snowfire a nasty slice above his eyes, while he nipped at his foreleg. The tussle ended with Brindleclaw on top. The tom wasted no time, his claws meeting Snowfire delicate belly. The warrior supressed a howl of pain as cuts were opened and blood spilled out.

I'm never going to beat him! He's too strong!

Then he remembered what Stormstar had said: Put your heart into it. But how would he do that?

Think of what you are fighting for, Snowfire, came Sunstreak's voice in his head. His father was going to help him!

As he battered Brindleclaw with his hind legs, Snowfire thought hard.

I'm fighting for WolfClan. I'm fighting for Sandstripe, and my father, and Skyflight. I'm fighting to restore the lost warriors.

Think harder, Snowfire, Sunstreak prompted. There is another reason, that belongs to you and you alone.

Snowfire succeeded in throwing off Brindleclaw, and now tried to think as he clawed him.

What could it be? It belongs to me? But what would belong to only me that I am fighting for?

Then he realized.

My pride.

That's it, Snowfire, Sunstreak said proudly. Now, put your heart into this battle and win!

He's right! I can't lose to Brindleclaw, or I'll be humiliated. I'll go back to the Clan as a coward! I must fulfill my destiny!

Brindleclaw aimed at Snowfire's neck with his claws, but Snowfire, now with his heart in the battle, easily dodged.

"Sorry, Brindleclaw. I can't lose to you," he said calmly, swiftly leaping away from the tom, then turning in midair and landing on his back. His teeth sank into Brindleclaw's shoulder, leaving a deep bite. Brindleclaw tried to roll beneath him, but Snowfire bit him again and he was stopped.

Snowfire flipped his opponent over, and was about to deal him one last blow, but then a cat appeared, starry, translucent. And this one Snowfire did not know. She was small, around apprentice age, and was a dark tortoiseshell with amber eyes.

"This battle is over. Snowfire has won," she declared. The rest of the warriors watched in shock, Blackfoot's jaw dropping.

Stormstar stepped closer to her.

"So, you have chosen him?" he asked.

"Yes, I have. Now he must fulfill his destiny. He must bring you back home and save his Clan."

Snowfire let Brindleclaw up, looking on in awe.

"Tawnypaw...is that really you?" Stormstar suddenly asked softly, his eyes full of memory. He knew this cat.

Tawnypaw nodded.

"Stormstar, it is time for you to go home. Begin your journey tomorrow. Your Clan needs you."

And she was gone.

Stormstar faced Snowfire, his expression proud.

"Snowfire, now that you have proven yourself, we will follow you home tomorrow. You are now one of us."

And everybody cheered.

Chapter 2 ~ Fade To Black[]

Back at WolfClan camp....

Redstar stared at the wolf before him, stunned into silence. Shadowsplash was almost like a copy of Stormstar, without the eyes and with a different pelt. But his size, the way he carried himself, that fighting look on his face...they all were just like Stormstar...

"I see I need to repeat myself. Where do you think you're going?" Shadowsplash asked again, his voice cold.

Redstar's muscles relaxed, and he found his voice.

"I could ask the same of you," he said calmly. "We're a little busy, as you can see."

Shadowsplash glared at him.

"Put those kits back where you found them, and get out of here," he ordered.

"And what will you do if we don't?" Hawkheart sneered, pushing forward.

Shadowsplash turned to the warriors den.

"Get out here, everyone! Kit raid from TigerClan!" he howled.

Instantly wolves poured from the den, Otterwind and Hareflame at the lead. They all immediately launched themselves at the intruders, latching onto striped pelts, tearing them with their claws. Shadowsplash took down Timberclaw, taking the kits and running for the nursery. But Redstar leaped onto his back, forcing him to the ground.

"Why don't you let go of those kits?" he hissed in his ear as he sliced open his sides.

Shadowsplash went up onto his hind legs for a moment, throwing off the leader, giving him just enough time to go into the nursery, place the kits down by a shocked Ravensong, tell her to defend them with her life, and race back out. Then Redstar was back, and he faced the tiger. The two circled, both growling. Shadowsplash spotted Blizzardstar defeating Hawkheart, while Cloudleaf chased away Timberclaw. At least they were gone.

Redstar charged. Shadowsplash crouched, pounced, and slammed into his chest, knocking him backward and pinning him down. He sank his long fangs into Redstar's shoulder, making him yowl with pain. But the leader was far from done. He rolled to the side, causing Shadowsplash to fall to the ground, exposing his belly. Redstar viciously clawed him, blood staining the ground. He swung his hind legs around, hitting him in the face, knocking him over.

Shadowsplash was about to leap on top of him when he heard a howl from the nursery. Leaving Redstar, he bolted inside to see Ravensong trying hopelessly to defend herself from a TigerClan warrior. Energy flaring in his muscles, Shadowsplash brought the intruder down and bit down hard on his shoulder. But that wasn't near enough to stop this warrior. Rising, he threw Shadowsplash aside. Shadowsplash felt blinding, sickening pain as his head collided with one of the rocks fortifying the nursery wall. He tried to fight the darkness appearing behind his eyes.

He almost wished he hadn't.

He stayed awake to hear the snap of Ravensong's neck.

Redstar entered the den, panting hard and bleeding heavily. He congratulated the warrior, who took the kits and disappeared through the entrance, then turned to Shadowsplash, leaning down close to him.

"You want to know why Stormstar left?" he asked maliciously.

Shadowsplash didn't answer.

"Because I drove him out."

And with that, he sank his teeth into Shadowsplash's neck and was gone.

Blood welled in the wolfs throat, and he coughed, trying to breathe and trying to combat the shock at Redstar's words.

Everything faded to black.

Petalstripe nervously approached the willow curtain that covered the medicine cats den. She was going to see Shadowsplash and apologize to him.

It was the morning after the raid. The entire Clan was in shock, mourning Ravensong and planning revenge.

This would not go ignored. TigerClan would pay for what they had done. The nursery was being repaired by Otterwind and Hareflame, Crowwhisper was healing the seriously injured: Shadowsplash and Cloverspring, and Blizzardstar refused to come out of his den. Cloudleaf was in there too, probably trying to comfort him.

But one thing was certain.

TigerClan and LionClan had allied.

Otterwind had reported it, after a bigmouthed enemy warrior had let it slip to him as they had fought.

Now the odds were stacked against them.

Now, their fight would be twice as difficult.

Petalstripe noticed Cinderfur padding sadly to the nursery where Ravensong's body was. Her daughter, Cherrypaw, followed. Cinderfur had been close to the deceased queen. Losing her would be hard. As for the kits, their loss was felt by every cat, young and old. They had been strong, at only 2 moons.

Petalstripe remembered the battle well. She had fought hard, earning herself a twisted leg which she limped on as she stepped up to the den entrance.

"Crowwhisper," she called. "Can I come in?"

"Of course," came the quiet mew of the medicine cat.

Petalstripe hesitated. Was she ready to do this? Deciding she was, she pushed through the willow and entered the familiar den. Crowwhisper appeared in front of her, staring at her with concerned yellow eyes.

"How is your leg, Petalstripe?" she asked.

"It's fine," Petalstripe assured her. "How are Shadowsplash and Cloverspring?"

"They have both escaped death, but narrowly. Come and see for yourself." Petalstripe nodded and followed her farther back into the den. Before them were two nests, occupied by the two injured warriors. Cloverspring's head was wrapped in cobwebs, along with her forepaw and back. She looked alright.

"What happened?" Petalstripe couldn't help but ask.

"She was thrown into the barrier. It was quite messy. She nearly broke her leg," Crowwhisper replied.

Shadowsplash had cobwebs on his neck, belly, and sides. He didn't look so good.

"He's lucky to be alive. They found him in the nursery with his throat bitten open. There was blood everywhere. He must have tried to protect Ravensong."

"I heard he fought Redstar," Petalstripe whispered, feeling sympathy seep into her at the sight of Shadowsplash. He was very brave.

"Well, I'll leave you now. I need to check on a few others' injuries," Crowwhisper said, dipping her head and leaving.

Petalstripe sat down beside Shadowsplash, already feeling guilty for what she had done. She remembered the night he had run into her. She had heard he and Blizzardstar fighting, and he had looked quite upset....

Suddenly Shadowsplash's yellow eyes opened, instantly finding her.

"Petalstripe?" he asked in a whisper, his voice hoarse and cracking.

It took Petalstripe a minute to find the right words. This would be hard....

"I-I came to apologize...for the way I've been acting. I never meant any harm by it, I swear. I was just so angry...and I felt so alone...I'm sorry..." she said quietly, trying to get it over with.

"It's okay, Petalstripe, I was never angry with you," her former mentor assured her. "Are you still...done with Snowfire?" Anger flared inside Petalstripe at the name of that mousebrain.

"Yes. It will be a while before I forgive him," she said scathingly. "But, Shadowsplash, I want to ask you now: Where did he go?"

Shadowsplash looked her in the eyes for a moment, as thought deciding whether or not to answer.

"All I can tell you is that Snowfire has a destiny to save this Clan, and that he had to go in order to fulfill that destiny," he explained.

A destiny? What kind of destiny did Snowfire have? Would he be remembered for it for moons to come? Would he really save their Clan?

"Petalstripe, he meant no harm in keeping secrets from you. I'm sure he was trying to protect you. He was forbidden to tell anyone."

"He told you!" she protested.

"That's because it has something to do with me," he said calmly.

Petalstripe opened her mouth, then shut it again, knowing it was better that she didn't argue with him. He was right, Snowfire had obviously had a good reason for not telling her. But that didn't stop her from being angry with him.

"You were very brave last night. I saw you fighting Redstar," she muttered.

Sorrow appeared in Shadowsplash's expression.

"I could've saved her." She knew he meant Ravensong.

"It's not your fault, Shadowsplash," she told him softly, realizing how much guilt he felt for not being able to stop the queens death. The tom fell silent, staring at the ground.

"When Snowfire returns, all of this will be over," Petalstripe whispered. "I'm certain of it."

And I may not have forgiven him, but, I will do my best to believe in him. .

Chapter 3 ~ Through the River, To the Truth[]

The sun through the den woke Snowfire the morning of the departure. Around him, the other warriors were beginning to stir, some stretching and yawning, others tossing and turning, on the verge of waking. Beside him, Raingaze sat with her eyes open.

"I was waiting for you," she said shyly as he sat up. "I didn't want to be the first one out."

"Well, you picked the right one to wait for. I'm an early riser," Snowfire mewed, his muscles rippling as he stretched, aching from his battle. His injuries had been quite minor, patched up by Doveflight, the pure white she-wolf, who also happened to be Raingaze's mother.

At that thought of her, Snowfire remembered something Shadowsplash had said:

"My mate left too, expecting kits."

Raingaze had been born after Doveflight had left, which meant....

"Snowfire?" Raingaze was staring in his face with a questioning look.

"Sorry, just thinking." He shook his head fiercely when she wasn't looking. "Let's go hunt, I'm starving." He would ask Doveflight about it later.

She agreed enthusiastically and they were off, leaving camp and going out into the forest. This territory was different here. The trees were tall and dark, slick with water now that the snow had melted. Snowfire liked it, but, he missed WolfClan's forest...

He was distracted by the scent of mouse. Mouse! It had been so long since he had tasted it that he hardly dared to believe it. Sniffing intently, he followed the trail, feeling it getting stronger and stronger until he could see a small, gray body up ahead. Very carefully, he fell into a crouch and advanced on it.

Suddenly, a twig snapped behind him. The mouse, hearing the sound, turned and fled. Snowfire whirled around, coming face to face with Raingaze.

"What was that for?" he asked angrily.

She looked nervous, something he had never seen on her before, as she stared at him.

"Snowfire...can I ask you something?" she asked quietly.

Calming down, Snowfire nodded.

"Do you...have someone in WolfClan...waiting for you? You know, a...special cat?"

Instantly, Petalstripe came to mind, bringing sadness and anger along. Snowfire shook his head.

Raingaze looked a little happier at this, and she continued.

"Well...do you want someone there...like that?"

"I don't know," he answered, annoyed. Why was she asking him this?

"What if I...was that cat?"

Oh.

Raingaze was in love with him.

Snowfire was speechless. Although he had suspected it from the beginning, he had never thought that she really did share the same feelings for him as he did for her. Admiration for her filled him. She had been born away from a Clan she had never known, and yet she was willing to come and help him and that Clan, even though she had no reason except that Stormstar was going. She was strong.

"It's okay if you don't want me to be that cat," Raingaze said sadly, misreading his silence as she began to back away.

Snowfire stepped forward, brushing against her, staring into her beautiful blue eyes.

"It's not okay," he whispered. "Because I do want you."

She gasped and looked up at him, her face bright with joy.

"Really?" she asked in disbelief.

Snowfire nodded.

"Raingaze, you've always been alone, haven't you? You're the young one here, one who's never even seen WolfClan before."

She nodded, still shocked.

"But now," Snowfire said softly. "You won't be alone anymore."

At that moment, in his head, he remembered Sandstripe's words....

"Don't let him be alone anymore."

Raingaze might not be alone now, but another wolf was...

It was just sunhigh as the group finally left camp. It had taken a while for them to say goodbye, and to accept the fact that they were returning to the place they had long left behind. Stormstar's words echoed in Snowfire's mind as they journeyed through the forest.

"We are not only leaving our home behind, but our past too. Whatever has happened here is gone now. Now, our new home lies ahead of us, and in that home we will begin our new lives," he had said solemnly. "And...we will do our best...to forget the lives...we left there...."

At that moment he stopped, unable to continue. Doveflight rushed up and pressed against him, whispering something no one could hear. After a little while, Stormstar raised his head and continued.

"We have all said our goodbyes. The sun has set on this part of our lives, and now, it will rise on a new part, a new journey."

And, in silence, they had left the camp.

Now, as they left the surrounding territory, Snowfire told Raingaze all about WolfClan, the other wolves occasionally listening.

"Blizzardstar is a wonderful leader," he said. "He was my mentor."

"Wow. He must have taught you well if you could defeat Brindleclaw." She sounded impressed.

"It was a draw," came Brindleclaw's voice from beside Stormstar. "That StarClan cat interrupted." He had been unhappy about Tawnypaw's intervention. A low growl emitted from Stormstar and he fell silent instantly. Clearly, he had touched a nerve. The leader looked back at Snowfire.

"Is my brother still alive?" he asked, piercing the young warrior with his eyes.

"Yes. He is a very brave warrior," Snowfire answered a little timidly.

"Glad to hear it." And then Stormstar turned away, sounding unhappy.

He really hates me.

Then Snowfire realized he still hadn't asked Doveflight about Raingaze's parentage. The white wolf, luckily, was beside him. Making sure Raingaze didn't hear, Snowfire leaned over to her.

"Doveflight?" he asked. She looked over at him with eyes that matched her daughters. "Yes?"

"I know...about Raingaze's father," he whispered.

She looked a little shocked, but her face shone with understanding.

"Please, do not speak of it to her. I would prefer that she find out for herself."

Snowfire nodded. He had been expecting that answer, as Doveflight would want to surprise her daughter.

Shadowsplash will be overjoyed...

Suddenly, his thoughts were interrupted by the distant roar of moving water.

The river had thawed.

Fear crept into Snowfire as he remembered his near-drowning. If it had been dangerous then, he couldn't imagine what it would be like now. Beside him, Doveflight and Raingaze stiffened, along with the rest of the wolves, even Stormstar.

"What is it?" Snowfire asked the white wolf.

"When we first journeyed through here, Mapledawn's mate," she indicated a light brown female wolf, "Thorntail, drowned in the river." Her voice was full of fear.

Snowfire looked over at Mapledawn. Her head was bent low, eyes showing grief. Fawnstripe was whispering something comforting in her ear, licking her head.

Raingaze looked tense as the river came into view. Snowfire pressed his fur against her, trying to calm her.

"It'll be okay," he whispered. "I'll stay beside you." He refrained from telling her about his own experiences.

Stormstar haulted, signaling for the rest of them to do the same. The river was moving fast. Snowfire now realized how wide and deep it was, and he shuddered. "We will cross in pairs! I will go in the middle, in case anyone...goes under..." Stormstar's voice was full of memory, and even a bit of fear. It was odd, hearing that in his usually calm tone.

Everyone nodded, and got together. Snowfire stayed right with Raingaze, as he had promised.

Brindleclaw and Blackwing went first, followed by Mapledawn and Doveflight, all going cautiously and quickly. Stormstar leaped in after them, his strong body more than a match for the current. Then Rowanblaze and Fawnstripe waded in, Mossfur and Russetfoot.

It was Snowfire and Raingaze's turn.

Snowfire went in the same time she did, trying to stay with her and stay calm. The water tugged at his fur, already threatening to pull him under. When they were fully in, it nearly reached his shoulders. He kicked hard, trying to get across as fast as he could. Up ahead on the shore, Rowanblaze and Fawnstripe had just gotten out.

"Come on!" Stormstar cried, helping a slipping Mossfur.

Snowfire surged forward, and then he was swept to the side, downstream. Raingaze called his name, watching fearfully as he was pushed further and further from her. Snowfire fought the current, trying to keep his head up. But it was strong, and was ready to take him under. His legs moved desperately, trying to fight against the force. He didn't want to drown! There was no Sandstripe, no one to leap in and save him this time.

His eyes closed and black water closed over his head.

Stormstar stood by the edge of the river, trying to combat the memories in his head as he helped his companions out of the water. He remembered Thorntail's death well. He had failed to save him, and had carried his lifeless body from the water...

Suddenly a fierce cry sounded. Stormstar looked to see Raingaze, still swimming, staring as Snowfire was pushed far away from her, far downstream.

Stormstar watched long enough to see his silver body disappear beneath the waves.

Raingaze made a move to rescue him, but Stormstar stopped her.

"No! I'll go!" he barked.

She nodded and continued forward. Half-sighing, Stormstar swallowed, then threw himself back into the water.

A blast of air hit Snowfire as something beneath him pushed him above the surface of the tossing water.

Stormstar... he thought vaguely, recognizing the dark fur.

Stormstar's powerful shoulder held him up as he swam strongly to shore, where the others were waiting, all looking on anxiously. The water threatened to overtake Stormstar, but he kept going.

Snowfire couldn't make snese of it. Why was Stormstar doing this? Never had he once seen the tom show any care for him at all.

At last, Stormstar took Snowfire by the scruff and hauled him up to the shore. Instantly, Raingaze was there, pressing her fur against his and supporting him.

"Thank you, Stormstar," he said as he took in huge breaths, coughing up water in between.

"It was nothing," the dark wolf replied tonelessly, shaking sparkling drops from his pelt. "We should all get some rest. There's some bushes over there that we could sleep under." He nodded toward some leafy bushes on the right. "We'll continue tomorrow at sunrise."

Snowfire just noticed how low the sun was. The day had flown by.

"Brindleclaw, you take up the first watch. Blackwing, you'll go next at moonhigh," Stormstar ordered. The two toms nodded.

Snowfire followed everyone except Brindleclaw and Stormstar, who lay down apart from everyone else, over to the bushes. He dropped down beside Raingaze, curled up, and, with one last shiver, was instantly asleep.

Snowfire's dreams were haunted by images of Skyflight, laying on the ground, white fur stained red, and Dawntail, bone-thin, snow buffeting her face as she dug up frozen bodies of prey...

A sudden rustle shook him awake. It was dark out, the stars glittering brightly against the black sky. Snowfire raised his head to see a huge, dark shape rising from the ground.

Stormstar, he thought.

Stormstar looked around to make sure no one was watching, then turned and padded away toward the distant trees.

When he was far enough off, Snowfire changed into a wolf, his fur still damp, and got up. Stepping over Fawnstripe and Rowanblaze, he picked up Stormstar's scent and folllowed the path. Up ahead, Stormstar was only a blur. The trail took Snowfire deep into the forest. It was pitch black, and very hard to see, but he managed to keep on it, his eyes searching for the great wolf.

Finally, after several minutes of tripping and stumbling through the trees, he found him.

Stormstar sat on top of a huge rock, moonlight falling through a gap in the trees onto his fur so that he looked like he was from StarClan. He stared up at the sky, face sad.

Cautiously, Snowfire walked up behind and leaped onto the rock, sitting down beside him. Stormstar's head whipped around.

"What do you want?" he growled, bristling slightly. His narrowed green eyes burned with an angry fire.

Snowfire flinched a little at his tone, but kept his voice.

"The truth," he replied.

"About what?"

"Why you left."

For a moment, a sadness fell over Stormstar's face again. His fur relaxed. But then he glared at Snowfire again.

"Why do you care?" he questioned, voice like stone.

"Because you're helping my Clan. Our Clan," Snowfire said strongly.

A haunted look appeared in Stormstar's eyes, as though memories of his life were starting to appear again.

"Fine. You'll just hate me for it."

Snowfire was about to say he didn't hate the wolf, but he was silenced by a flick of the tail.

"This all started when I was an apprentice. I was at my first Gathering. And that's when I met Redpaw, from TigerClan. Back then, we'd been fighting them a lot, because both of our Clans were at the height of their strenght. Anways, he wouldn't shut up about how his Clan won our last batle. I got angry and we had a little fight. It died down pretty quickly, but the stupid furball was mad that I beat him. You could call us rivals. Soon after that, we had another battle with TigerClan. Redpaw was there, and we went at it again. He got away from me and killed Tawnypaw."

Snowfire gasped. So that was how Stormstar knew Tawnypaw, and how she died.

"Time went on," Stormstar continued, "and we both became warriors, Redblaze and Stormfeather. I took on a mate, and beat him up again after his Clan invaded LeopardClan and we went to help. TigerClan eventually became WolfClan's rivals, probably because of Redblaze and I at the Gathering. They stole prey, made fun of us at Gatherings, and we just kept fighting. But every time, I knew it was Redblaze and his friends. I smelled them on every moved border, every slaughtered piece of prey. Somewhere along the line, I became deputy after ours, Greentail, died of sickness. Redblaze was angry that I was deputy and all. He took some of his friends to our territory one night to steal kits. My mate was in the nursery, expecting kits, and he killed her and took two. I got one back, but the other one got trampled and died."

Snowfire remembered hearing about TigerClan's kit raids before. He shuddered at the thought.

"Well, as you can guess, our leader died, Whitestar. I was made leader, and made Blizzardspot my deputy. Redblaze finally became deputy himself, and his Clan ambushed ours at night. We fought again, and he kept telling me it was all my fault that the Clan was suffering. I suddenly realized that I was the cause of all of the fighting and bloodshed, so I left. I just walked out. I wandered for days, and I lost my first life. Then Brindleclaw and the others found me. One of ours, Thorntail, died in the river after I failed to save him. Raingaze was born to Doveflight. And we've been together ever since."

Snowfire sat in stunned silence. Could this really happen to one cat? All this suffering? This sorrow and grief?

"Stormstar, I-" he began apologetically.

"Don't say you're sorry. I know you hate me. I abandoned your Clan. They will never accept me. Ever." There was a thorn-sharp edge to his voice, although sadness made it shake slightly.

Snowfire took a deep breath and tried again.

"Stormstar, listen. I don't hate you. You're coming to save our Clan. How can I hate you when you're helping me? You saved my life today?"

Stormstar let out a sigh.

"I don't know. I just hope Blizzardstar won't be too angry at me for leaving the Clan to him. He was a great deputy."

Questions suddenly filled Snowfire's head. One, however, stuck out, and was out of Snowfire's mouth before he could stop it.

"Stormstar...who was your mate?" he asked.

Stormstar looked like he was forcing himself to say it.

"Sandstripe."

Shock and realization hit Snowfire like a bolt of lightning. It all made sense to him now. Why she wanted him to help Stormstar, why she led him on the journey, why Stormstar had been so stunned at her name.

"She led you here, then?" Stormstar interrupted his thoughts.

Snowfire nodded.

"Stormstar, I - "

"Stormfeather. I don't deserve to be called Stormstar anymore," he said sadly.

"Stormfeather," Snowfire restarted, "I promised Sandstripe that...I wouldn't let you be...alone..." he said uneasily, unsure of how Stormfeather would react.

Thankfully, the wolf only nodded.

"Then I should tell you that you are getting close to succeeding. Come, the sun will be up soon. Let's not worry the others."

Snowfire nodded and leaped off the rock. A faint orange glow had appeared over the horizon. The two wolves walked silently, side-by-side, back to camp. A tiny glimmer of joy appeared inside Snowfire. Finally, he was beginning to understand why he had looked the ice.

His quest was not just about saving his Clan.

It was about bringing the lost warriors home.

Chapter 4 ~ This Is Your Battle[]

Blizzardstar sat in his den, staring at the ground. Sorrow weighed on him like a boulder. Beside him sat Cloudleaf, also looking down. Neither talked.

I can't believe this has happened. Ravensong dead, two kits gone, TigerClan and LionClan allied. It's horrible. Shadowsplash was right, I'm a terrible leader..., Blizzardstar thought. If only I had seen this coming, if only I had been thinking. Why do they hate us so much? We're no different! We are warriors of the code, not some lawless band of rogues...

Stormstar appeared in his head.

Oh, not that again. I wish he hadn't gone. If he had stayed this never would have happened. I wouldn't be the leader who was remembered for leading his Clan into failure, LionClan would be crushed for this. Stormstar, where are you? Why have you gone? I have gone over it so many times in my head, but I can't seem to find a reason. Why is this happening? Why now, when our warriors are short and weakened by leafbare? I must try to defend the Clan, yes, I must. I cannot let them down. I have to try and do my best to stop this.

Suddenly, a head poked through the willow curtain. Otterwind.

"Lilystar is here. She wants to speak with you outside," he said.

"Alright." Blizzardstar, changing into a wolf, rose to his paws, stretching out his long legs, feeling his muscles burn with soreness from the battle. Freshly healed wounds were visible on his sides and shoulder. Cloudleaf right behind him, he strode into camp. Most of the snow was gone, and it was much warmer now. More prey had been found, proven by the larger than normal fresh-kill pile. At least something was going right.

In the middle of the clearing stood five leopards. Lilystar was in front, while four of her warriors surrounded her. In each of their jaws they held several pieces of prey.

Lilystar bowed her head at the sight of the WolfClan leader.

"Blizzardstar, it is good to see you," she mewed. "My Clan has heard the news of the kit raid, and we send our sympathy and offer you this fresh-kill, caught in our land."

"Thank you," Blizzardstar said solemnly. "Show them where to put it," he told Cloudleaf, who quickly led the warriors over to the fresh-kill pile.

Lilystar now faced him.

"There are hard times ahead for you," she observed quietly, eyes full of wisdom. Lilystar had always been on good terms with him. Their Clans had never argued during the twos reign.

"I know."

"LionClan and TigerClan have allied. We have seen it and heard it. TigerClan's warriors patrol LionClan, and LionClan patrols TigerClan. What is in store for us, the two peaceful Clans?" Lilystar wondered.

"They are trying to bring down WolfClan. I know it. They have murdered our warriors, stolen our kits, and slaughtered our prey. It makes sense," Blizzardstar told her sadly. "And StarClan has told me."

Lilystar's eyes grew curious and sympathetic.

"I see. I am sorry to hear that," she whispered, touching her nose to his shoulder lightly.

"Will...will LeopardClan help us in the battles to come?" Blizzardstar asked, hoping she would say yes.

But Lilystar shook her head.

"This is not our battle. We wish to remain peaceful," she said.

"But you're part of this forest! You should help keep it peaceful!" Blizzardstar couldn't help but grow angry.

Lilystar's eyes turned to stone and he was silenced. She was always kind and gentle, but, when she got angry enough, Blizzardstar knew that she was far stronger than any warrior save Stormstar, who was gone.

"Blizzardstar," she began quietly, her eyes softening. "I understand that I am part of this forest, and I accept that fact. But this is WolfClan's battle. If LeopardClan were to step in, all respect for your Clan from any cat would be lost. WolfClan must defend its own pride."

Blizzardstar knew that she was right.

"Thank you for coming, and for your generosity," he said.

She pressed against him, and he felt her warmth flow to his fur.

"Good luck, old friend," she murmured, licking his cheek gently.

"Thank you," was all he could say.

Lilystar turned to her warriors.

"Let us go," she called to them.

And they were gone.

It was moonhigh as Blizzardstar emerged from his den, starlight falling softly on his wolf pelt. The camp was silent, everyone fast asleep. Blizzardstar slowly crossed the clearing, looking around at the home he had known for so long. The barrier and the nursery had been patched up since the raid, so everything was in good condition, but, on the inside, Blizzardstar knew it was fragile. Was it really in good condition? It didn't feel like it to him as he went into the forest.

As he walked, Blizzardstar thought constantly.

Lilystar is right. This is WolfClan's battle. We must defend our pride. But how? It seems impossible, with the shape we're in right now. I must try and pull things together. But with Snowfire gone...

Snowfire. His own apprentice, his former deputys son, was still missing without a trace. The search party Blizzardstar had sent several days ago had come back with nothing.

Where did he go? Shadowsplash has to know something. He's definitely acting like it. They were so close before Snowfire left. But why did he leave? It wouldn't be out of cowardice, no, Snowfire was braver than that. So what was it? Is there something he must do? Does he have a destiny? StarClan have told me that TigerClan and LionClan have allied. Why don't they tell me anything else? What lies ahead?

Blizzardstar sighed as he stopped by the mossy boulder.

"Trouble sleeping?" asked an old voice from behind.

Blizzardstar turned and saw Larkflower, standing a catlength away. She looked younger in the sparse light, he realized, as she came up and sat down next to him.

"What are you doing out here?" he asked. How had she known he had gone?

"I couldn't sleep. I thought that's why you were out here too, or isn't it?"

"It is," Blizzardstar answered wearily. Despite his exhaustion, sleep had evaded him, although he couldn't imagine why. It was just one of the many things he didn't understand...

Larkflower looked over at him.

"Blizzardstar," she began softly. "Do you think they'll ever come back?" Blizzardstar didn't have to ask who she was talking about. He knew, deep inside him.

"I don't know," he replied honestly. "I don't even know why they left in the first place."

Larkflower sighed, now looking down at the ground.

"He left for us," she muttered. "I know he did." Now she sounded just like Shadowsplash. Not in the mood to argue, Blizzardstar agreed.

But had Stormstar really left for them? He had left the Clan in a dark time, not to mention that half the warriors went with him.

"Larkflower," Blizzardstar began. "Do you think he was a better leader than I?" He couldn't help but ask.

"Who knows? It is impossible to compare you two. You are both fine leaders, I can tell you that," she said. Clearly, she didn't share the same opinion as her son, although they hadn't spoken since Stormstar's departure. The thought of that brought another question to Blizzardstar's head.

"Why are you angry at Shadowsplash?" he asked.

Her eyes turned sad, a shadow passing over them.

"I'm not. I never was," she whispered shakily. "I was just...so upset, and I just... I was always so disappointed in him and I thought he could have stopped his brother. I was horrible to him, wasn't I?"

"Not horrible, but, well, you weren't exactly nice," Blizzardstar admitted, trying not to sound mean.

But Larkflower only nodded.

"I want to say sorry, but, I don't think he would listen," she said. Blizzardstar ran his tail down her spine to calm her.

"Larkflower, we can get through all of this, but only if we all work together," he told her. "I promise, we will push through and...and show TigerClan and LionClan that we belong here."

We have to.

Chapter 5 ~ Return of The Lost[]

Snowfire could feel it.

They were getting close.

The pine trees around him were very familiar. They had been the first stage of he and Sandstripe's journey.

Soon, they would be home.

Next to him, Raingaze walked quietly, her eyes to the ground, clouded with thought. Noticing her odd behavior, Snowfire gave her a nudge. When she looked up, he realized her eyes clouded with fear.

"What's wrong?" he asked quietly, pressing against her.

"Snowfire, what if we're not meant to return, Stormstar and us? What if we were meant to leave and never come back? I mean, the Clan won't exactly be happy with us, will they? You know, because we left?" she said in a hushed voice, trying not to let the others hear.

"Raingaze, they have no reason to be unhappy. We're going to help them. Without us, they can't fight off LionClan. Don't worry," he whispered, licking her cheek. "Everything will be alright. I promise."

Her face and eyes brightened, filling with love as she stared at him.

"Thank you, Snowfire," she murmured. "For everything."

A little while later, they reached the border. Stormfeather halted, signaling for the others to do so. He stepped forward, inhaling deeply, closing his eyes. For a moment, he just stood there, taking in the scent of WolfClan. When his eyes opened, they were full of memory.

"The last time I saw this place, it was dark, tigers and wolves were fighting, and the ground was stained with blood," he muttered, half to himself.

Everyone exchanged glances. They all knew what he was talking, except for Raingaze who pressed closer to Snowfire, her pelt crawling with nerves.

Joy rose inside of Snowfire. He was home! He thought back to the night he had left, when he had looked back at the territory, wondering if he would ever see it again.

I am seeing it again. And so is Stormfeather, he thought triumphantly.

Although, he realized that it would never be the same. He would have to tell the Clan about his destiny, the prophecy, and everything.

They would never look at him the same way again. Now, he would forever be remembered as the wolf with a destiny.

Stormfeather sighed, looking around at his fellow warriors.

"It is time for us to enter our home. Put all past memories of this place behind you. They are long gone, what has happened is over and done, and there is nothing we can do to change it. Never think, even for an instant, that you do not belong here. The rest of this Clan may not treat us like we do, but, deep down, the same blood runs in our veins as it does in theirs. We are part of this Clan," he said firmly, looking each and every one of them in the eye. When he got to Snowfire, his green irises overflowed with understanding and respect.

"We owe our lives to Snowfire, who has brought us out of our exile. Him...and Sandstripe."

Everyone around him, including Stormfeather, bowed their heads.

"Thank you," Raingaze murmured.

"Thank you," Doveflight repeated.

And so the two words echoed out of every wolfs mouth, finally ending with a gruff "thanks" from Brindleclaw.

Stormfeather turned away from them, now looking forward again. He took a deep breath, then stepped over the border.

"Let's go."

And so it began. One by one, they all crossed the border, stepping solemnly over it. When she crossed, Snowfire heard Mapledawn murmur "If only Thorntail were here."

Their walk through the territory was slow and silent, Stormfeather in the lead. Of course, he knew this place as well as any of them. He often looked from side to side, observing the trees, the bushes, everything, sometimes muttering unaudible things under his breath.

Just as they neared the barrier that blocked camp, three wolves leaped before them, crouching low.

Otterwind, Hareflame, and Berrycreek.

"Who are you?" Otterwind growled, his streaked brown fur standing up along his spine.

Stormfeather didn't answer. Instead, he stepped aside, allowing them to see Snowfire.

All three wolves eyes widened, until they may have burst from their heads.

"Snowfire!" Hareflame stepped forward, staring at his lost Clanmate in disbelief. "Where - How - What's going on?"

"You will find out if you take us to camp," Snowfire answered, meeting his eyes evenly.

Otterwind faced him, still wary.

"And should we follow the orders of a deserter?" he asked lethally.

Stormfeather shouldered Snowfire aside, towering over Otterwind.

"Would you follow the orders of a former leader?" he questioned, green eyes not angry but piercing.

Otterwind backed away, gasping.

"It's you! The lost leader, the one who left moons ago!" he breathed. Stormfeather nodded.

"So take us to your camp," he said.

Otterwind dipped his head and turned to his companions.

"Let's go," he whispered to them, clearly a bit frightened of Stormfeather.

Snowfire nearly bristled with nerves as they were led by the patrol to the barrier. Along the way, Stormfeather nudged him.

"I'm impressed how you reacted to those three. You have heart," he whispered.

Snowfire thanked him, then, with a gulp, pushed through the barrier entrance. Otterwind went right into the center of the clearing, raising his head.

"Get out here, everyone! Snowfire has returned!" he cried.

Instantly, wolves appeared, crowding around the travelers.

"Snowfire, where have you been?" Cinderfur demanded, eyes wide.

"We were so worried!" Cloverspring said, remnants of deep wounds on her body. In fact, everyone here was scarred, or covered in half-healed injuries.

What had happened?

The chatter and noise was overwhelming. Everyone tried to get close to Snowfire, while others were staring at Stormfeather and his warriors, marveling at them.

"SILENCE!" came the powerful howl of Blizzardstar from the Howling Rock. His white fur was dull, and he looked exhausted as he leaped down and came through a part in the crowd. When he saw Snowfire, his eyes brightened.

"You have come back!" he said joyfully, rushing forward and touching noses with his former apprentice. "I am glad."

Snowfire bowed his head respectfully.

"But where did you go?" his leader asked him as he straightened up.

Realizing he would have to tell the entire tale, Snowfire launched into it, beginning with the night visit from Sandstripe, to the long journey, to finding Stormfeather, to their return. He omitted he and Stormfeather's nighttime talk, knowing to keep it secret.

When he was finished, an uproar started.

"That can't be true!" Otterwind sneered.

"You were just scared to starve!" Bramblefall scoffed.

"STOP!" Another wolf, jet black with dark gray smudges, appeared, facing his Clan angrily.

Shadowsplash.

Like everyone else, Shadowsplash was covered in wounds, and he looked shaky on his feet. Still, his voice was strong and his eyes blazed.

"How can you say he is lying? Look at him! Scared to starve? He's in worse shape than most of us! And how can you scoff when you have living proof right in front of you!" He flicked his tail at Stormfeather and the others.

Blizzardstar stepped forward, staring in disbelief at Stormfeather.

"You have come back," he said, his voice a bit frosty.

Stormfeather dipped his head low.

"Blizzardstar. It has been a long time," he breathed. "I have come to help your Clan."

Blizzardstar met his eyes, and for a moment there was silence, everyone watching as the two had their silent exchange.

"I accept your help gladly. We are in much need. LionClan and TigerClan have allied to take down WolfClan," he said in a grave tone.

Snowfire's jaw dropped. TigerClan and LionClan had allied? That was way outside of the code!

"Several days ago, TigerClan came on a kit raid. They stole two and killed Ravensong," Blizzardstar continued sadly. "Thank you for coming."

"You're thanking him?" Otterwind cried in outrage. "After he left? That is mousebrained!"

Yet another cat silenced him.

"Be quiet! Stop talking of things you don't understand!" came Dawntail's fiery snap. Her eyes were angry, but when they fell on Snowfire, they softened with love. She hurried toward him, nuzzling him fondly.

"Oh, you have returned! I was so worried! Oh, Snowfire!" she exclaimed. For once, Snowfire didn't complain. Instead, he let her carry on, happy to see her.

Another wolf stepped forward. Larkflower, staring at her lost son, her face slowly lighting up.

"Stormfeather. My son," she breathed, going to him and brushing against his huge body. Stormfeather licked her head and greeted her warmly, but then he stepped away.

"Apologize to your other son." He nodded toward Shadowsplash. "He is equal in value to you with me."

Larkflower nodded, and, nervously, faced the son she had neglected for so long.

"Shadowsplash. I was never angry at you. I was only grieving, too heavily perhaps, but...I want you to know that I will never do such a thing again. I love you my son," she said softly, touching noses with him.

Everyone let out a little "aaah" at the sight of the mothers reuniting with their sons. It was a happy sight to view, and no one tried to intervene. Even Blizzardstar had stepped back, watching contently.

Shadowsplash then greeted his brother, the two exchanging a few hushed words that no one could hear. Then, Doveflight came forward, Raingaze at her side. It was as though there were no one else in the world but these two. They ran toward each other.

"Doveflight, you came back. I knew you would, I always knew, but..." he trailed off, licking her cheek lovingly. She rubbed against his shoulder, eyes full of joy.

Snowfire was glad to see them reunite. It was good to see Shadowsplash happy for once, instead of gloomy and depressed.

And then, Doveflight introduced Raingaze to her father.

"You are so beautiful," Shadowsplash whispered, touching his nose to her head.

"Father..." Fondness filled Raingaze's eyes for the father she had never known.

She exchanged a glance with Snowfire. He nodded to her.

"Father, I would like you to meet my mate," she told Shadowsplash. Snowfire walked over and stood before him.

"With your permission," he said, almost jokingly.

Shadowsplash dipped his head.

"Of course."

And for the next several moments, as Stormfeather and his warriors reunited with the Clan, Snowfire felt as though everything was perfect.

How wrong he was.

Chapter 6 ~ Welcome To The Different[]

It was after the sun had gone down that everything changed.

The warm reception of the lost warriors slowly cooled down, until everyone avoided them.

It had sunken in.

These wolves had abandoned them.

They could not be trusted.

Snowfire could only watch hopelessly. He tried very hard to get his friends to accept them, but, no one would listen. Petalstripe wasn't helping. She wouldn't even look at him. The second she had seen him she had marched off, nose in the air. She clearly wasn't over their little falling out.

Stormfeather's happiness gradually faded into his normal dark mood, and soon he and Shadowsplash went out into the forest together. They claimed it was to hunt, but, deep down, Snowfire knew that they wanted to be alone.

Raingaze was the only one out of the group that the Clan liked, mainly because she had not even been born when Stormfeather had left, so she was innocent. Also because she was Snowfire's mate, and everyone trusted Snowfire. Still, even with the Clan on her side, Raingaze was sad. She tried to comfort her friends, but they were beyond that. They had been through enough lately.

Rain was falling as Snowfire settled down in the den. Beside him, Raingaze sat in a nest he had built for her.

"Thanks," she whispered wearily, laying against him.

"I just wanted to return the favor," Snowfire replied, thinking back to when they had first met, and she had welcomed him into their own den.

That den. It had been nice, definitely not as crowded as this one, what with the new warriors. Everyone was cramped, some very unhappy about it.

"I can't even move a muscle!" Otterwind complained loudly.

"An ant wouldn't be able to crawl through here," remarked Berrycreek.

"Shut up, all of you," Brindleclaw shot back, growling low.

Otterwind's head snapped around to look at him.

"I'd love to see you make me," he sneered.

"You want to go a few rounds?" Brindleclaw challenged, starting to get up.

Fawnstripe lay her tail on his shoulder.

"Go to sleep. We're all squeezed in, Otterwind," she said calmly.

Otterwind shot her a menacing glance, but obliged, and was soon fast asleep. Brindleclaw took a little more persuading, but soon he lay done as well and drifted off.

Snowfire and Raingaze lay wide awake, staring at each other, as though they were communicating through their minds.

Their little exchange was interrupted, however, as Shadowsplash walked in, soaking wet from the rain. He carefully stepped over everyone and joined Snowfire and Raingaze at the back, cramming in next to them. No one protested, they simply moved over so he would fit.

But when Stormfeather tried to come in, howls of protest sounded.

"It's too full in here! Go sleep somewhere else!" Berrycreek cried amidst the noise.

Shadowsplash tried to shut them up, but Stormfeather only dipped his head and left, but Snowfire could feel the sorrow coming off of him in waves. Through a gap in the bushes branches he could see the huge wolf sitting alone in camp, his head down, water now running off his fur.

"They have no right to treat him like that," Shadowsplash growled angrily. "Just because of something that happened moons ago..."

"Sometimes it takes a long time to forgive someone," Snowfire reminded him gently. "They just aren't seeing the true side of him. Stormfeather has a good heart. He cares about everyone here. He just has a hard time showing it," Raingaze said wisely. Snowfire admired her calm words. The three watched as Blizzardstar went up to Stormfeather. The two exchanged a few words, then disappeared into the leaders den. "Blizzardstar seems alright with him," Snowfire said. "He's hiding it. You didn't see him after Stormfeather left. He was a wreck, an absolute wreck. He still is." There was a bitter edge in Shadowsplash's voice. "Calm down," Raingaze said soothingly. "Let's all just get some rest. It's been a crazy day." As he lay down and drifted to sleep, Snowfire couldn't help but agree.

The next morning only brought more trouble for the new arrivals. It all started when they first woke up, and Cloudleaf was assigning patrols.

"Stormfeather, please lead a couple warriors along the LionClan border. Patrol every pawstep of it. We can't let them try anything, not now," he ordered.

Stormfeather nodded and turned, his eyes searching for available warriors.

"Don't even think about it," Otterwind growled, backing away as he came near.

"Count me out," Cinderfur snarled.

Shadowsplash shot them an angry look but said nothing. Snowfire's fur nearly bristled with irritation. Why couldn't they just shut up and get over things already?

"Snowfire and Hareflame," Stormfeather finally said.

Snowfire gladly joined the huge wolf, happy to be with him, while Hareflame went rather reluctantly as they left the camp. The first signs of newleaf were showing in the forest. Buds appeared on bushes, leaves sprouted on trees, birds chirped joyfully. The sounds comforted Snowfire, driving all of his annoyance and stress. The border was quiet, thank StarClan, and their patrol went quickly. However, just as they neared the barrier to return, Stormfeather pulled Snowfire aside. Hareflame looked back questioningly, then shrugged and disappeared into camp.

"What is it?" Snowfire asked. Stormfeather's eyes were unreadable, except that they pierced him like thorns.

"Snowfire, was it really a good idea coming here?" Stormfeather questioned. "I mean, was it worth it for us to come back?"

"I think it was. Why?" Snowfire had a feeling he knew where this was heading....

"Oh. Well, I'm starting to have doubts. Do you see how your Clanmates - if you could call them that - are acting?"

Snowfire nodded hesitantly.

"Then why are we here?" Stormfeather's voice suddenly turned anguished. "Why are we taking this treatment? I don't care about myself, I knew I'd get that kind of reception, but I do care about my friends. They followed me all the way out there and back, and now they're being forced to face this. Is this Clan really worth saving? It's so divided."

Snowfire took a deep breath, trying to find the right words. What could he say? What would make Stormfeather feel better?

Then he knew.

"Stormfeather...it was worth it for you to come here. This Clan is worth saving," Snowfire said encouragingly.

"How?" Stormfeather spat.

"Well...you said so. When we first got to the border to come home, you said that no matter what, we were all a part of this Clan. You said that the past was behind us, and we had to move forward. You - you said that the same blood runs in our veins as it does in theirs. Think about it. Your blood runs in their bodies, Stormfeather. This Clan is yours, and mine, and everyones here. All of us have a right to be here. We are all a family, sort of. If your blood is in these cats bodies, then they are worth saving." Snowfire sent a silent prayer to StarClan that the wolf would believe him.

Stormfeather was silent for a moment, going over his words in his head.

"I understand. I'm sorry, Snowfire, for having doubts," he said apologetically.

"There's no need to be sorry. I understand entirely," Snowfire assured him. "This is your pride, Stormfeather. We all have prides. So defend yours. Don't take what they say lying down. Otterwind? That mousebrain? Teach him a lesson. Show him that you do belong here."

Stormfeather's eyes widened, then, slowly, filled with realization.

"You're right, Snowifre. Don't worry, I'll give that filth a piece of my mind," Stormfeather promised, now starting to push through the barrier.

As he followed, Snowfire thought hard.

I have my own pride to defend.

My father's pride, too.

Snowmane, you'd better watch out.

Chapter 7 ~ Rival[]

"The cats attending the Gathering will be Snowfire, Stormfeather and all his warriors, Shadowsplash, and Otterwind!" Blizzardstar cried from the Howling Rock.

Down below, Snowfire's heart soared.

Yes! They're all coming!

However, protests sounded, as usual.

"All of them? Are you serious?" Whitetail burst out.

"The Clans will never accept this." Cinderfur shook her head.

Blizzardstar silenced them all with a flick of his tail. His eyes were ablaze with contained anger.

"Stop this nonsense! You will trust these warriors! They have come to help us, not harm us!" he snapped angrily.

"And what do you mean by 'help'?" Otterwind drawled. Cloudleaf suddenly leaped down right in front of him, eyes cold. Everyone watched in shock as the normally quiet, calm deputy stared down the warrior.

"If I were you, I wouldn't question Blizzardstar, or my claws might just tear your pelt into strips," he growled, wolf fur bristling.

"Enough, Cloudleaf," Blizzardstar ordered. His deputy nodded, and, with one last icy glare, rejoined his leader, still looking angry.

"Tonight, LeopardClan will support us in our efforts to stop TigerClan and LionClan! We must try to do all we can to prevent a battle, although, right now, it looks inevitable," Blizzardstar admitted. "But still, we will not back down, no matter what! We belong here!"

Everyone let out howls of pride, and then the chosen warriors raced from camp, hurrying toward Great Plains. Raingaze ran beside Snowfire, looking anxious.

"I've never been to a Gathering! This will be so exciting!" she gushed, eyes shining.

"It's too bad you had to attend one on such a grim occasion," Doveflight said beside her, looking sad.

Stormfeather ran silently next to Snowfire, his eyes to the ground.

"Redstar will be there, won't he?" he asked miserably.

Snowfire nodded, feeling sympathetic for his friend.

"Don't worry. Just keep your head down until Blizzardstar announces that you've returned."

"I don't want him to," Stormfeather told him.

"I know. But you know he has to. I promise, if Redstar tries anything, I'll stand by you." Snowfire knew that he would. This wolf deserved none of this treatment. He may appear to be brooding, but, on the inside, he did care, just like Raingaze had said.

"Thank you," Stormfeather said genuinely. "And I will stand by you if Snowmane tries anything." Snowfire had told him about that on the journey home, during a nighttime conversation. Dread filled him at the thought of facing his rival once again.

Great Plains appeared before them.

"Enter with your heads high, and do not let anyone make you feel less than what you are!" Blizzarstar called, picking up speed as they raced toward the crowd of Clans. Upon the Great Rock stood the three other leaders. Redstar and Goldenstar were right next to each other, while Lilystar stood apart from them, her eyes cold whenever they landed on the two. Clearly she was not in favor of their alliance. Blizzardstar joined the three, while the wolves joined the lions, tigers, and leopards, steering clear of the allied Clans.

Snowfire, Raingaze, Stormfeather, Shadowsplash, and the rest of the lost warriors sat together, surrounded by leopards. A few young apprentices looked up in awe at Stormfeather.

"I've never seen him before!" one whispered.

"Me neither!" said the other. Stormfeather did not look at them, instead keeping his eyes on the four leaders.

"You've been up there, haven't you?" Snowfire asked in a hushed voice.

The wolf nodded, the haunted look returning to his eyes.

Raingaze was staring at everything, taking in all that was around her. She sighed deeply.

"How amazing!" she exclaimed.

Snowfire nosed her fondly.

"I'm glad you like it." He spotted Snowmane, thankfully, far away from him.

The chatter from the crowd died down as Lilystar stepped forward, her powerful gaze sweeping over all.

"LeopardClan has nothing to report, except for two new warriors and three new apprentices." Cheers sounded. "However, I am going to say that LionClan and TigerClan are causing quite a stir, and, if they set a paw on our land, they will be shredded head to toe."

Snowfire was stunned at her harsh words. They sounded so odd, coming from a wise, calm cat like her. The alliance must have really angered her.

Goldenstar and Redstar went together, announcing the alliance and some Clan news. They both looked smug and proud, something that disgusted Snowfire.

Blizzarstar was last. Finally.

"Cats and wolves of all Clans, I would like to, first of all, announce the return of Stormfeather, the lost leader, and his warriors!"

All of the said warriors reluctantly stood as cheers and yowls of protests erupted around them. The look on Redstar's face was priceless, his eyes widening at the sight of his old rival. Stormfeather met his gaze calmly, his own eyes burning with cold fire.

"What - How - Explain, Blizzardstar!" Goldenstar demanded as the cheers died down.

"Snowfire, a warrior of our Clan, was sent on a quest to bring back these warriors in order to defend our Clan, and he has done so! Snowfire, please stand!"

And so it was Snowfire's turn to be gawked at. He felt his fur crawl with unease. Snowmane was looking at him with particular interest, something he did not like.

Redstar stepped forward, his eyes still on Stormfeather, who remained standing. "So, you have returned," he said coldly, hatred filling his voice.

"I have," Stormfeather replied evenly, his voice emotionless.

"Do you think you have won, WolfClan? Do you think you stand a tiny piece of a chance against us, the strongest Clan in the forest?" Redstar spat, looking at Blizzardstar, who nodded.

"Why don't you tell them what happened that night? The night when you tore WolfClan apart?" Stormfeather called up, now looking angered. His warriors howled in support.

"I don't think I will," Redstar answered. "Unless you want to make me," he added hungrily.

Blizzardstar stepped in front of him.

"This is no place for a fight, Redstar," he reminded the tiger, who backed up a little. "Stormfeather, sit down."

The wolf obliged, though he and his nemesis still stared down each other.

"All we ask is that LionClan and TigerClan become two, not one, again," Blizzardstar said calmly.

"And leave our Clans in peace," Lilystar chimed in.

"But what's the fun in that?" Goldenstar asked.

Blizzardstar recoiled at his words.

"Fun? You think killing is fun? You think destroying a Clan is fun? You think suffering is fun?" he demanded, towering over the lion.

"That's exactly what we think," Redstar replied smoothly.

"You filthy piece of scum," Lilystar growled. Snowfire had never seen her look so angry before. She practically shook. "Do you want the wrath of LeopardClan, WolfClan, and StarClan upon you?"

"StarClan is a tale for kits, Lilystar," Goldenstar scoffed.

"SILENCE!" the leopard yowled. "DON'T YOU DARE SAY SUCH THINGS! DON'T YOU DARE SPEAK TO ME LIKE THAT! DON'T YOU DARE QUESTION STARCLAN!"

No one moved. No one spoke. You couldn't have heard anyone even breath. That's how stunned everyone was at this outburst.

"Do not make me unsheathe my claws here, Goldenstar," Lilystar finally said quietly, breathing heavily, looking shocked at the force of her own anger.

The lion backed away quickly, Redstar joining him. Blizzardstar also kept his distance, his eyes wide. Clearly they were afraid of Lilystar. Snowfire himself felt the fur on his spine stand up. She was powerful, that was for sure. Suddenly the moon vanished, blocked by black clouds.

"This Gathering," Lilystar cried. "is long over!"

The Clans split up, each joining their own leader. Snowfire started to follow his companions back to Blizzardstar when teeth fastened in his scruff. He felt himself being dragged far back, until at last they released him.

As he got up, shaking dirt from his fur, Snowfire met the eyes of Snowmane.

"Snowfire, it's been a while," the lion purred maliciously.

"What do you want?" Snowfire demanded, anger burning in his pelt.

"You know what I want. I want to tear you to pieces. I want to wipe you from existence. And I'm going to do that," Snowmane hissed dangerously.

"You sure about that?" Snowfire snarled.

"I don't know. Let's find out. Meet me on the LionClan/WolfClan border tomorrow morning," Snowmane offered.

Should I do this? Is this what I want?

"What if I refuse?" Snowfire asked.

"Oh, you'll be there. Believe me."

And then his rival was gone, vanishing into the myriad of golden pelts following their leader.

As he rejoined his Clan, only one thought was present in Snowfire's mind.

I'm going to crush him.
